Route Suggestions to Luderitz
April 18, 2018
The best and shortest route from from Springbok is via Oranjemund.
See the route link :
https://goo.gl/maps/gwaFkvzZ2os
Turn off 40km from Springbok at Steinkopf and drive 80km to
Port Nolloth and 90km to Sendelingsdrift border, 10km to Oranjemund and another 85 to Rose Pinah. From there it is approximately 300km to Luderitz via Aus.
It is in excellent condition- tarred right through.
Enjoy the trip.
For routing take note you have three options to select from. All are tarred roads. Just make sure tyres good as distances long. Also carry drinking water and refuel on Namibia side as fuel price is lower.
(1) CPT to Springbok to Steinkopf to Port Nolloth to Alexander Bay to Oranjemund (no longer a closed or restricted diamond town) to Rosh Pinah to Aus to Luderitz. This would be my choice. Beautiful scenic and unique landscape. Goodwood RC are going this route. Border post Alexander Bay - Oranjemund opens 06:00 closes 22:00. Road tax n$270 (SA Rands accepted in Namibia - notes and coins) payable on entry to road fund administration (RFA) office at border post. No other entry or visa charges for SA citizens.
(2) CPT to Springbok to Steinkopf and straight ahead to SA-Namibia Border. Then at Noordoewer in Namibia side to Aussenkher along orange river to Rosh Pinah to Aus to Luderitz. My second choice. Border post Violsdrift - Noordoewer open 24 hours. Road tax n$270 (SA Rands accepted in Namibia - notes and coins) payable on entry to road fund administration (RFA) office at border post. No other entry or visa charges for SA citizens.
(3) CPT to Springbok to Steinkopf and straight ahead to SA-Namibia border. Then Noordoewer straight in Grunau to Keetmanshoop and at the traffic circle turn left to Aus to Luderitz. Also a lovely drive as you pass by the top end of the fish river canyon. The quickest so perhaps consider this route for your return journey to ct. Border post Violsdrift - Noordoewer open 24 hours. Road tax n$270 (SA Rands accepted in Namibia - notes and coins) payable on entry to road fund administration (RFA) office at border post. No other entry or visa charges for SA citizens.
Namibia Traval Q & A
April 15, 2018
Travel Questions with Answers from Danny Meyer - Namibia AG
1 Do we have to have the vehicle's registration papers with us?
Namibia is part of SACU as well as CMA. So no need to have registration papers to bring the vehicle into the country. Of course the driver must have a valid driver’s licence and everyone in the vehicle a passport.
Generally I advise SA motorists to bring either the vehicle registration papers or preferably a certified copy in case of an accident or emergency.
Note a Namibian road user tax of N$270 per vehicle applies, to be paid on entry. In SA the road tax is paid as part of fuel, but here it is paid on entry N$270. The Road Fund Administration (RFA) issues a receipt, which must be produced in the unlikely event of being stopped at a road block.
2 If the vehicle is on HP , do we have to have the bank's written permission to take it over the border?
No. Not required.
3 We are overnighting in Oranjemund. Marc said that 20 metres beyond the border post at Oranjemund is a little wooden hut where he had to purchase a permit (R 400) and sign in to travel on the "diamond" road into Namibia.
Oranjemund is an open town and no permits or payments needed to enter or exit. Only payment is the road user’s tax of N$270. Seemingly Marc travelled into the country via Oranjemund when it was still a closed town of Namdeb.
4 Marc also advised that in August 2017 that piece of road was not tarred and would/could chew up soft compound tyres. Do you know if that piece of road is fully tarred? (some of our convoy are traveling in 1 series BMW and C series Mercs)
Road from Oranjemund to Rosh Pinah to Aus to Lüderitz fully tarred. Lovely scenic roads all in good condition. However, avoid going beyond speed limit as fines are steep. Also take care as wildlife (animals) in some areas.
